“Delivering improved emergency preparedness and response in Nepal through enhanced partnership between the Red Cross and the Government of Nepal – DIPECHO 8”

DIPECHO-8 is implemented by Nepal Red Cross Society with the financial support of ECHO and RC consortium in Bardiya, Banke and Dang District covering two most vulnerable VDCs in each district. Identifying need of capacity building of the stakeholders working in the field of disaster on disaster data collection and analysis, DDRC and DIPECHO-8 consortium supported by NDRC Nepal organized six days training on disaster data collection and analysis in its project districts (two days in each district) from 28th July to 2nd Aug 2016.

The objectives of training were to enhance the capacity of personnel from stakeholders to produce quality disaster report efficiently in short period of time and to sensitize about use of maps as tool for decision making. The training was divided in three sessions; the first session included a presentation about the need of data management for disaster management in reference to examples from Nepal and around the world. The second session included use of word platform for preparation of the report efficiently, professionally and in short duration of time. This session included contents to impart knowledge on using the different functions on the word platform such as section breakdown, auto insertion of table of contents and figures, citation and references. The third session included the basic concept of GIS, introduction to thematic mapping and map production.

The major achievements of training were information sharing on disaster and contemporary issues, enhanced skills of using Microsoft word for report preparation, sensitization on need of accurate data for disaster management and developed skills to use ARC GIS for thematic map production. The duration of training should be at least one week to make the participants capable of using such tools and participating institutions self reliant on map production.
