“Disaster Data Collection and Analysis (Phase III)”

National Disaster Risk Reduction Centre facilitated third phase of “Training on disaster data collection and analysis” organized by Nepal Red Cross society and supported by Red Cross Consortium (DIPECHO-8) at Ghorahi, Dang from October 21-26, 2016. The aim of the training was to strengthen and enhance capacity of staff from District Emergency Operation Centre, District Administration Office, District Development Committee and Municipal offices on collection of data and analysis of data for disaster management.
The main components of training were application of GIS for vulnerability mapping, preparedness and response, basic skills of Microsoft Excel and Word, mobile data collection and orientation on information management platform. The first and second phase of the training sensitized and made participants capable of producing the hazard maps, carry out basic analysis and produce reports independently by using GIS platform and Microsoft Excel and Word.
Third phase of training was offered to the same participants of first and second phase of training, building on the training components delivered during previous phases.
The major achievement of the training was that the participants were oriented and sensitized about benefits of mobile based data collection. They were capable of using their mobile devices to collect data. Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA) orientation also proved very fruitful for the participants. The participants collected data from community using IRA form in mobile. This provided them with the practical know-how of the training session.
The training building on the earlier phases of training focused more on polishing the skills imparted earlier along with imparting new sets of skills on mobile data collection and maintaining IM platform. This in turn made them aware of the importance of IM platform. The platform developed was appreciated and accepted by the participants. Towards the end of the training, the participants were able to develop thematic and vulnerable maps independently. They were able to internalize the interconnectedness of training contents of the three phases of this training session that was conducted over different periods of time.
