Talk Program on Disaster Risk Reduction in New Local Government Structure of Nepal Concluded
ADRA Nepal in collaboration with NDRC Nepal organized a talk program on “Disaster Risk Reduction in New Local Government Structure of Nepal (Rural and Urban Municipalities) Opportunities and Challenges” on June 27, 2017 in Kathmandu under Project entitled “Building Resilience to Disaster by Promoting and mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management and Resilience Initiatives in Earthquake Affected Communities”BURDAN”. The event was chaired by Joint Secretary of MoHA, Mr. Krishna Bahadu Raut while Mr. Shankar Hari Acharya, Chief National Emergency Operation Center, MoHA and Mr. Purushottam Subedi, Chief Fire Control and Disaster Management Section, Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MOFALD) presented on issues highlighting in Global Platform on DRR held in Cancun, Mexico and the way forward for mainstreaming DRR in restructured Federal units.
Er. Suman Meher Shrestha from Town Development Fund, Mr. Ajaya Dixit , Executive Director, Institute for Social and Environmental Transition Nepal (#ISET-Nepal) and Er. Surya Narayan Shrestha, Deputy Executive Director, National Society for Earthquake Technologies (#NSET) also presented on urban development strategies and mainstreaming DRR in urban development. During the program, ADRA Nepal Country Director Dr. Josue Orellana as key note speaker highlighted the need of mainstreaming DRR in new local government of Nepal.
The key message of this talk program are as follows:
1) mainstreaming DRR is a must in government plans and strategies for sustainable development,
2) disasters should be taken as opportunities to showcase resilience and challenges must be faced with preparedness from all concerned stakeholders.
3) the program created a platform whereby knowledge on the initiatives of the government and institutions like NSET and ISET were disseminated in a productive manner.
